Omaha Laundromat Stabbing: Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder After Fatal Altercation Over Lighter

Omaha, Neb. — A 26-year-old man faced a preliminary hearing Wednesday in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred at a laundromat. Deshawn Griffin has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Johnathan Wallace, who was reportedly stabbed twice in the chest during a confrontation in the parking lot of Anytime Laundry, located near 46th and Cuming Streets.

During the hearing, prosecutors detailed the events leading to the stabbing. They described how Wallace approached Griffin to borrow a lighter, sparking a dispute between the two men. As tensions escalated, Griffin allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Wallace, leading to fatal injuries.

Griffin’s attorney argued for a reduction of the charge from second-degree murder to manslaughter, but the judge found sufficient probable cause to continue with the more severe charge. Wallace’s autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was the stab wounds inflicted during the altercation.

In testimony, a detective recounted the investigation process, which included reviewing surveillance footage from the laundromat. The footage helped identify Griffin and his wife, 24-year-old Kayla Griffin, as suspects, eventually leading to their arrest. Authorities discovered bloody clothing and the weapon believed to have been used in the crime at the couple’s home.

Griffin’s demeanor reportedly changed shortly after the incident. A detective noted that he had shaved his head and beard before his arrest, potentially to alter his appearance. Additionally, investigators found searches in Griffin’s phone history that included inquiries about auto body repair, raising further suspicions about his state of mind following the incident.

During police questioning, Griffin claimed that as the situation escalated, he feared Wallace might be reaching for a weapon in his backpack. Despite being cooperative, Griffin’s account did not produce any weapons from the backpack when it was searched by detectives.

As the legal proceedings continue, both Griffin and his wife remain behind bars pending further hearings. The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence in public spaces. The community is closely watching as the judicial process unfolds, eager for resolution in a tragedy that has resonated deeply in the area.
