CORNELIUS, OR – Shoppers at a busy Walmart found themselves caught in the middle of terror just days before Christmas when a brazen kidnapping attempt unfolded in front of stunned families.
The chaos erupted on the evening of December 21 as parents navigated crowded aisles, searching for last-minute gifts. Suddenly, inside the store at 220 N. Adair Street, a routine outing turned perilous for one family when a man allegedly tried to snatch a small child from a stroller as the family passed by.
Authorities say the child’s father wasted no time springing into action. As the suspect reached for the young child, the father intervened, leading to a noisy and chaotic struggle inside the store. Other shoppers reportedly watched in shock as the confrontation escalated.
During the melee, deputies say the would-be kidnapper armed himself with a knife. Despite the threat, the father continued to resist, fighting to protect his child. The suspect eventually dropped the knife, fleeing the scene on foot before escaping in a white Jeep parked nearby. The father was left with minor injuries, and the child was unharmed.
Witnesses quickly mobilized, jotting down the fleeing vehicle’s license plate and alerting law enforcement. Deputies tracked down the white Jeep a short distance away, quickly identifying 37-year-old Denis Villalobos as the driver. Villalobos was promptly taken into custody by responding officers.
Investigators say security cameras recorded the alarming sequence of events, revealing the suspect appeared to be following and eyeing the family in the moments before the incident. Authorities noted that the family had no prior connection to the suspect.
A Washington County grand jury has since indicted Villalobos on charges including attempted kidnapping, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. Sheriff’s officials praised the father’s swift bravery and the vigilance of bystanders who assisted in gathering key information.
The case rattled the normally quiet Cornelius community, particularly since the suspect is a local resident. However, family members involved in the incident expressed gratitude for the rapid response from law enforcement and the safety protocols in place at the store.
Villalobos remains held in the Washington County Jail as he awaits his initial court appearance scheduled for Monday. The incident has left families in the community shaken as they reflect on how quickly an ordinary evening can become life-altering.
