Fort Worth, Texas — A tragic family dispute turned deadly on Dec. 1 when a 19-year-old man killed his uncle in a drive-by shooting incident, according to Fort Worth police officials. The young man, identified as Derrick Sanders Jr., faces felony murder charges following the fatal shooting of his 40-year-old uncle, Christopher Sanders Sr., as they traveled together in a vehicle.
The incident unfolded in the early afternoon when the victim and the suspect, along with four others, were in a blue Dodge Charger that was closely following a black Chrysler 300. The vehicles were seen departing an apartment complex near Western Center Boulevard, subsequently heading north on Mark IV Parkway. During the pursuit, both Christopher and Derrick Sanders reportedly opened fire on the Chrysler from within their vehicle.
Tragically, the shooting took a grim turn when Derrick Sanders, positioned in the back seat on the driver’s side, accidentally shot Christopher Sanders. According to police reports, Derrick was hanging out of the window firing shots when some of the bullets took a downward trajectory, piercing the roof of their Dodge Charger and striking his uncle in the head.
Police were later called to the scene at the Garden Gate apartment complex on North Beach Street, where they discovered Christopher Sanders deceased in the vehicle. An investigation into the incident was supported by surveillance footage which captured Derrick Sanders in the act of shooting and subsequently revealed the misfired shots that resulted in his uncle’s death.
Further complicating the case is the revelation that the attack on the Chrysler was premeditated. Police stated that all individuals in the Dodge were wearing gloves and had masked the car’s license plates with paper tags—indications that they had planned the assault on the occupants of the Chrysler.
As the case develops, authorities have not released the identities of the other passengers in the Dodge nor indicated whether additional charges will be brought against any other individuals involved in the unfortunate series of events.
