Hermosa Beach, California — A disturbing video surfaced this week, showing a group of teenagers on electric bikes brutally assaulting a man near the Hermosa Beach Pier, sparking outrage among the local community. The incident, which occurred last Friday evening, has drawn attention to ongoing concerns about youth behavior and public safety in the area.
Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that five juveniles, aged 13 to 15, have been identified in connection with the attack. Two of the suspects, believed to be the main aggressors, were taken into custody and face felony assault charges. They are currently being held at the city jail and are expected to be transported to Juvenile Hall, where the case will be evaluated for possible prosecution by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Witnesses reported that the assault began when the 56-year-old victim inadvertently engaged with the group while walking near 11th Court and Beach Drive. Surveillance footage captures the alarming moment when the teenagers surrounded him, knocking him to the ground before unleashing a flurry of punches and kicks.
Emergency responders were dispatched following a 911 call reporting the attack, and the victim was taken to a hospital. Although he was later released, details regarding his injuries and current condition have not been disclosed. Police continue to investigate the incident, having spoken with the parents of the involved juveniles and received numerous calls, emails, and videos from concerned community members seeking accountability.
In a statement, the Hermosa Beach Police Department acknowledged the community’s distress over the circulating videos. “We take this matter seriously and appreciate the community’s patience as we work through the details,” the statement read. “We thank those who have provided information, allowing us to focus on the facts.”
This latest incident adds to a broader pattern of troubling behavior among youth on electric bikes in the South Bay region, where similar occurrences have been reported in nearby cities such as Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. These incidents have included reckless riding, disturbing public safety, and even igniting fireworks on crowded beach piers.
In response to escalating concerns, Hermosa Beach officials enacted an emergency ordinance last June to mitigate dangerous behaviors associated with electric bikes. The legislation mandates that minors wear helmets, prohibits riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and bans e-bikes on certain trails. Violations can lead to the impounding of the bikes.
Since the ordinance’s implementation, police have issued 40 citations related to e-bike violations this year and have impounded 19 bikes. Law enforcement continues to encourage the community to remain vigilant and has requested anyone with further information about the assault to reach out to the Hermosa Beach Police Department.
As the investigation unfolds, residents hope for heightened accountability and safety measures to prevent future incidents involving youth and electric bikes in their community.
