Cincinnati, Ohio — A violent shooting incident at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Monday near the University of Cincinnati campus in Corryville resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left two others hospitalized. The Cincinnati Police Department reported that officers on patrol were drawn to the scene by the sound of multiple gunshots.
According to Capt. Mark Burns of the Cincinnati police, officers found four victims at the intersection of University and Highland avenues, while a fifth person, also wounded, sought medical help independently at a nearby hospital. By Tuesday morning, it was confirmed that this fifth individual was not part of the shooting incident, suggesting a separate occurrence.
The deceased have been identified as Shawn McDaniel Sr., 44; Shawn McDaniel Jr., 22; and Laurenz Nixon, 21, all male. Three victims were pronounced dead, with two dying at the scene and the third succumbing to injuries at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. The remaining two victims are currently in stable condition at the same hospital.
One notable survivor, a 21-year-old male, was wheelchair-bound due to injuries from a previous shooting. His presence at the scene highlights not just the recurring violence but also the personal stories of those affected.
Residents in the vicinity reported that the gunshots resembled fireworks or sounded like something from a movie, illustrating the shock and disbelief often experienced during such violent outbreaks. “My heart just sort of dropped a little bit that it could been this day is anybody’s community,” said witness Ronald Caulton, expressing a sentiment of fear and unpredictability that such incidents bring to neighborhoods.
The shooting took place in close proximity to both the medical center and the university campus, which added to the urgency of the police response. Capt. Burns noted that the gunfire led to a chaotic scene that spanned multiple blocks, complicating the efforts of first responders and investigators.
Authorities are currently interviewing a person of interest as part of their investigation at the Criminal Investigations Section.
