Phoenix, Arizona — A 24-year-old man, already facing charges for a violent assault on a woman, has now been linked to a murder that occurred in the same area last summer, law enforcement officials report. Luis Gustavo Prudente Tapia was arrested last week following a brutal attack that left a woman with critical injuries in an alleyway on August 14.
Police allege that the woman, who suffered multiple fractures and other severe injuries, was attacked randomly near 44th Street and Oak Street. The severity of her injuries has raised serious concerns about public safety in the area.
Authorities have now identified Tapia as a suspect in the murder of a 64-year-old woman, Margie New, who was found unresponsive in the same alley on June 13, 2024. New succumbed to her injuries and passed away in the hospital about a week later, prompting an investigation that led detectives to connect her case with Tapia’s recent arrest.
DNA evidence collected during the investigation into New’s murder initially hit a dead end, with no matches found in the database. However, subsequent DNA collected from the August attack revealed a match, linking Tapia to both cases. This evidence has raised alarms about the potential for a pattern of violent behavior.
Tapia faces multiple felonies, including attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, and four counts of aggravated assault regarding the recent attack. Charges related to the murder investigation are still pending, as detectives gather further evidence.
