MONTREAL, CANADA – Despite being linked to multiple deaths in Canada and labeled a “dedicated suicide promotion website” by mental health organizations, an online forum that encourages and facilitates discussions about suicide remains accessible in Canada.
Two separate Quebec coroner’s reports from 2021 and 2022 recommended the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) explore ways to restrict access to such sites. The Ontario forensic pathologists also warned about the forum in a 2021 research paper, noting the “promotion and support” of a particular method of suicide that appears to be largely via online information-sharing.
The website has come under renewed scrutiny earlier this year when a Toronto-area man was arrested and charged with aiding multiple suicides. Families suspect that many of his clients, who bought a potentially lethal substance from him, were directed to him through the forum.
Additionally, families of individuals who have taken their own lives after visiting the forum have urged the government to take action. They expressed concern about the devastating impact the platform has on families and its contribution to an unsafe online environment for children and youth.
Despite calls for action, various Canadian authorities claim they do not have jurisdiction to order internet service providers or telecommunications companies to block specific websites. The Liberal government has promised a bill to improve online safety, but it does not seem to cover the suicide forum.
The connection between this online forum and the abetting of suicide by a Canadian individual has led to renewed concerns about the platform’s access and its impact on vulnerable individuals.
