Edmonton, Canada — A 60-year-old man was left seriously injured after a sudden and severe assault in Edmonton’s Boyle Street neighborhood, leading to the arrest of a 41-year show has a long criminal record, authorities reported. The attack, described as unprovoked, occurred as the victim was headed to a local gas station near Jasper Avenue and 92 Street on the evening of July 11.
According to local law enforcement, the assailant struck the older man, beating him until he lost consciousness, and then attempted to strangle him using a shopping bag. Police were alerted to the incident by bystanders and were quick to arrive on the scene, where they apprehended the suspect following a short pursuit on foot.
Emergency medical responders rushed the victim to the hospital with injuries that were initially deemed life-threatening. Fortunately, the man’s condition has stabilized, and he has since been discharged from the hospital.
Acting Inspector Michael Dreilich highlighted the critical role that the immediate response by police played in the incident. “Thankfully, officers were nearby at the time of this assault; they undoubtedly saved the complainant’s life. Had they not acted so quickly, we may be discussing significantly more tragic circumstances today.” Dreilich added, “There is no place for this type of brazen, random violence in our city.”
The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Storm Saskatchewan, was also taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure to treat minor injuries incurred during the arrest. After being medically cleared, he was taken into police custody.
Authorities have mentioned that Saskatchewan has an extensive and often violent criminal history, and they suspect drug involvement in the attack. He has been charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder, pending further legal proceedings.
