West Valley City, Utah — A 19-year-old who was the sole survivor of a devastating murder-suicide in 2024 has sadly passed away, as reported by his family on a fundraising platform. Sha Reh was just 17 when he initially endured the tragic loss of his immediate family, a scenario that left a haunting mark on his life.
The incident in December 2024 shocked the community when police discovered Sha with a severe gunshot wound at his home. First responders found five family members, including his mother and three siblings, dead at the scene. Authorities believe that Sha’s father was responsible for the murders before taking his own life.
Despite the traumatic experience and the loss of his vision due to the injury, Sha showed incredible resilience in the months that followed. Family members confirmed his recent passing in a statement shared through a GoFundMe page aimed at funding his funeral. The announcement expressed heartbreak over his unexpected death, noting that he died on January 11, 2026, at his aunt and uncle’s home.
In the message, family members shared memories of Sha’s courageous journey following the tragic events. They highlighted his determination in overcoming numerous challenges over the past year, including adapting to life without sight. Sha successfully enrolled at the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind in early 2025, where he learned to navigate life using Braille.
“Despite the profound losses he faced, Sha maintained a positive outlook, demonstrating a remarkable zest for life,” the statement read. “He was blessed with a loving support network and transformed his pain into a story of hope.”
Sha once described his journey of learning Braille akin to the experience of mastering English when he and his family moved from Myanmar to the United States. In previous interviews, he expressed gratitude for the love surrounding him and emphasized the importance of staying positive in the face of adversity.
His family extended their thanks to the emergency responders and law enforcement who were involved in the tragic incident that took so many lives. Reflecting on his faith, Sha mentioned that his beliefs played a crucial role in his ability to persevere and remain hopeful.
