Road Rage Escalates: Colchester Man Arrested After Gruesome Eye Gouging Assault

WINOOSKI, Vt. — A violent confrontation on Mallet’s Bay Avenue has left one man hospitalized and another in custody following a severe road rage incident. The Winooski Police Department reported that Aaron Williams, 44, from Colchester, was arrested after allegedly attacking another driver in a fit of rage.

The altercation reportedly began when Williams passed the other vehicle and abruptly cut in front of it, slamming on his brakes while still in traffic. This prompted both drivers to exit their cars to confront one another. According to police, Williams struck the victim in the face before launching into a brutal assault that involved gouging the victim’s eyes with his thumbs.

Following the shocking attack, the victim stated he heard a popping sound, lost his vision, and collapsed onto the ground. Williams continued to assault him, landing several additional punches and attempting further eye gouging, resulting in extensive injuries.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and transported the victim to the University of Vermont Medical Center. He underwent emergency surgery but unfortunately has not regained his sight and remains hospitalized under medical care.

Williams fled the scene immediately after the assault but was later apprehended in Burlington. He now faces serious charges, including aggravated assault and maiming, as authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

Witnesses reported the scene was chaotic, and local officials are urging the community to remain vigilant about road rage incidents. This troubling case highlights the potential for aggressive driving behaviors to escalate into life-altering violence.
