Tangipahoa Parish, La. — A tragic road rage incident has claimed the life of 17-year-old Katelynn Strate, who was seven months pregnant when she was shot in the head during a confrontation on Sunday. Strate’s baby, delivered via emergency cesarean section, is reported to be in stable condition and receiving care.
Authorities from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) reported that the altercation between a Ford Expedition and a Dodge pickup truck escalated on North Hoover Road in Ponchatoula. The incident involved aggressive driving behaviors, including tailgating and abrupt braking, before one driver, identified as Barry West, allegedly fired a single shot that struck Strate.
Moments after the shooting, Strate was rushed to a nearby medical facility where doctors performed the cesarean section to deliver her baby. The fate of the infant provides a small measure of solace amidst the profound loss Strate’s family is enduring.
Barry West, the man arrested in connection with the incident, is now facing multiple charges, upgraded to second-degree murder following Strate’s death. He is currently held at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, where authorities are continuing their investigation.
The TPSO is urging anyone who may have encountered West in a similar road rage situation to reach out to their Criminal Investigations Division. They emphasize the importance of community vigilance and reporting suspicious behavior.
This incident has sparked conversations about road safety and the consequences of aggressive driving, underlining how quickly a dispute can escalate into life-threatening violence. Many in the community are mourning Strate’s untimely death and reflecting on the broader implications of such events on public safety.
As authorities continue their investigation, the family is left grappling with the loss of a young life cut short and the responsibility of caring for the newborn. The community is rallying around them, and a GoFundMe has been initiated to support funeral and medical expenses.
