CARLOW, Ireland — A local rugby player was sentenced to three years in prison last week after admitting to assaults that left a couple severely injured during an event at a popular bar. Barry Grey, 23, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault causing harm stemming from a violent encounter that unfolded on June 25, 2023, at The Barracks pub on Tullow Street.
The assault occurred when Grey, who has played for both Carlow and at the national level, attacked the couple while they were celebrating a 21st birthday. Surveillance footage played during the court proceedings depicted Grey striking the man before turning on the woman, delivering several blows until she collapsed to the ground.
In harrowing victim impact statements, the man reported waking up with no memory of the attack, only to find his partner covered in blood. He expressed the deep emotional toll the incident took, noting the distress caused by the proliferation of video clips online. The couple has faced social isolation, with many acquaintances avoiding them since the assault.
The woman detailed her traumatic experience in court, recalling the flashbacks and panic attacks that plagued her after the incident. She noted the profound physical and psychological impact, describing her injuries and the disruption to her life, including a five-month absence from work. She characterized the ordeal as a “savage and brutal attack” by a complete stranger, profoundly affecting her relationship and family dynamics.
The couple had also endured anxiety related to the impending court case, which weighed heavily on the woman during her pregnancy last year. The uncertainty caused her considerable stress, limiting her ability to take necessary time off from work after the assault.
Judge Eugene O’Kelly, who presided over the case, remarked that Grey’s actions were both disproportionate and unjustified, emphasizing the significant harm inflicted on the couple. He characterized the assaults as particularly violent and underscored the long-lasting repercussions experienced by the victims.
During the sentencing phase, it was revealed that Grey had provided €6,500 in compensation to the couple. His legal counsel noted that Grey had faced personal challenges, including an injury that affected his rugby performance and the use of medication to manage his mood leading up to the incident. On the night of the assault, Grey reportedly consumed a significant amount of alcohol, but he recognized that this did not excuse his behavior.
Despite having no prior convictions, Grey’s actions were taken seriously by the court. Judge O’Kelly mentioned that the assaults fell on the upper end of the scale in terms of severity. However, he acknowledged Grey’s early guilty plea, demonstrated remorse, and the compensation offered to the victims, allowing for a reduction in the headline sentence from four years to three years, with the final year suspended.
The judge also backdated the sentence to reflect the time Grey has already spent in custody since March, as he continues to engage in rehabilitation efforts while incarcerated, including attending counseling and working in the prison kitchen.
