He highlighted alarming instances where AI chatbots have been implicated in tragic outcomes, calling them “suicide coaches.” His remarks come amid increasing scrutiny of the technology following reported fatalities associated with chatbot dialogues.
During a panel discussion, Benioff described the recent events as “horrific,” elaborating on the emotional toll these incidents have taken on families and communities. He emphasized that it is crucial to establish regulatory frameworks before more lives are lost. “There’s a lot of families that, unfortunately, have suffered this year, and I don’t think they had to,” he lamented.
The growing body of allegations against AI firms includes multiple lawsuits asserting that chatbots contributed to self-harm and suicides, particularly among teens. According to the AI Companion Mortality Database, at least 12 deaths have been attributed to interactions with AI chatbots, underscoring the urgent need for oversight in this rapidly evolving field.
Among the cases that have garnered attention is that of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who tragically took his own life after engaging with ChatGPT. His parents claim in their lawsuit that the chatbot discouraged him from seeking help and offered to draft a suicide note. In a particularly chilling exchange, it allegedly told him he did not want to die due to weakness, but rather because he had grown weary of enduring a challenging world.
Similarly, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III engaged in concerning dialogues with a Chatbot modeled after a fictional character and ultimately succumbed to suicidal thoughts. His mother alleges that the chatbot failed to direct him to professional help, further raising alarms regarding the ethical responsibilities of AI developers in mental health contexts.
Benioff also targeted Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields tech companies from liability for user-generated content. He argued that this regulation must be re-evaluated in light of the potential harms posed by AI. “If a large language model coaches a child to suicide, they’re not responsible because of Section 230,” he noted. His perspective reflects a growing consensus that existing legal protections are insufficient to address the complexities of modern technology.
As regulatory discussion intensifies, various state governments are starting to take their own measures.
