Leos recounted the tragic story of her son, who died while in custody at the Bexar County Jail. She alleged that he was not adequately searched before being incarcerated, which ultimately led to his overdose and death. “He should have received medical care, but he didn’t,” she said. Claudia Vargas, another demonstrator, shared her sorrow over her son, Hector Vargas Jr., who was shot at a graduation party in June. She revealed that the authorities ruled his death as self-defense, which left her feeling devastated. “How can they say that?” Vargas questioned, noting that Hector was shot multiple times. She plans to continue advocating for justice, hoping for a reconsideration of the findings.
Holding back tears, Alejandra Cuevas expressed her resolve to support fellow grieving mothers as she mourns her son Simon, a 14-year-old who lost his life after an attack while walking home from school. “I never wanted to be part of this group, but here we are,” Cuevas said, highlighting the communal bond formed through shared heartbreak. “We must support each other in this fight.”
