Scarborough, U.K. — In a harrowing event that has left a local woman with life-altering injuries, four individuals have been sentenced following a brutal attack during the early hours of October 28, 2023. The assault, marked by extraordinary violence, occurred after the perpetrators had been denied entry to a local bar.
The victim, a woman in her 50s, was confronted and assaulted by the group on St Thomas Street, shortly after purchasing food from a nearby takeaway. She was beaten to unconsciousness in an ordeal that included punching, kicking, and being dragged into the roadway.
The main aggressors, sisters Toni Lee Patterson, 32, and Ellie Patterson, 20, along with their friend Tonia Louise Stott, 35, and the youngest sister, Abbie Patterson, 19, were all legally addressed for their roles in the attack. Toni Lee Patterson received an eight-year prison sentence, while her younger sister Ellie was handed down seven years and three months in a Young Offenders Institute. Additionally, Stott was sentenced to one year in prison, and Abbie received a suspended sentence with community service and rehabilitation requirements.
Disturbingly, the violence escalated as the victim lay powerless on the street. She suffered severe injuries including a facial fracture and a brain bleed which exacerbated her pre-existing partial blindness, leaving her with significant vision loss. Police Staff Investigator Paul Thompson of Scarborough CID described the assault as “shocking and unprovoked” which changed the victim’s life dramatically. He rebuked the attackers’ defense that their actions were out of character, prompted by intoxication, emphasizing that there is no excuse for such violent behavior.
During the trial, the court heard from the victim, who shared the profound personal impacts of the attack. She mourned the loss of her former self and expressed uncertainty about her future.
The sentence was handed down at York Crown Court on March 7, 2025, with the court also issuing rehabilitation and monitoring requirements aimed at preventing future incidents by the perpetrators.
