Shiprock Man Sentenced to Four Years for Life-Threatening Assault in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A 26-year-old man from Shiprock has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for a violent assault that left his victim with serious injuries. Tyrell Jordan Benally, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was found guilty of brutally attacking a woman at a residence, resulting in life-threatening damage.

The incident occurred on January 1, 2024, when Benally struck the victim multiple times and strangled her until she became unconscious. This assault led to significant bodily harm, including injuries from the strangulation that posed a serious risk to her life. The federal court’s ruling highlights the severity of such violent acts and the commitment to holding offenders accountable.

Benally’s sentence includes no parole, as is standard in the federal justice system, and upon completion of his prison term, he will face three years of supervised release. U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison emphasized the seriousness of the case, underlining the dangers posed by domestic violence.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Farmington Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, in collaboration with the Navajo Police Department and the Department of Criminal Investigations. Ellison and Raul Bujanda, the Special Agent in Charge of the Albuquerque FBI Field Office, announced the sentencing, reflecting the agencies’ ongoing efforts to address and reduce violence effectively. They stressed the importance of support and resources for victims of similar circumstances.
