Venjaramoodu, India — A 23-year-old man, identified only as Afan, has been accused of committing multiple murders in Venjaramoodu, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram. Police reported that the suspect, who confessed to the killings upon his voluntary surrender at the local police station, cited an inability of his girlfriend to live without him as his motive for her murder.
After turning himself in, Afan attempted suicide by consuming poison and was subsequently hospitalized. He has since recovered sufficiently to be formally arrested. During initial interrogations, police uncovered that financial strain might have played a significant role in the tragic events.
Investigators revealed that Afan faced considerable financial difficulties, accumulating debts of approximately 6.5 million Indian Rupees ($79,000) from various creditors. The accused reportedly planned a suicide pact with his mother and brother, which tragically evolved into the mass murder of five family members including his 88-year-old grandmother, his 13-year-old brother, his girlfriend, his paternal uncle, and the uncle’s wife on February 24.
The local police chief of the rural district of Thiruvananthapuram, Sudarsan K S, stated to media that financial issues had indeed pushed the family toward a crisis. Initially, the accused had borrowed 40,000 Indian Rupees ($485) from a financial institution, indicating the acute monetary problems that plagued the family. However, the health of the suspect is now stable and further investigations are ongoing, with forensic tests being conducted to provide more clarity on the circumstances.
Interestingly, the accused’s father, recently returned from abroad, refuted claims of significant financial woes, suggesting that the family did not face substantial economic hurdles. He expressed his unawareness of the factors leading to the incident and deferred to police for the ongoing investigation.
Afan’s mother, who survived the attack, is currently receiving medical treatment. Details on her condition remain scant, as she struggles with memory recall about the event. The complexity of the case is exacerbated by the murders’ occurrence across three different locations under two police jurisdictions—Venjaramoodu and Pangode.
Authorities recorded Afan’s arrest concerning his grandmother’s murder on Thursday, indicating that additional charges relating to the other deaths will follow. His legal custody extends until March 13 as the investigation continues.
