BROOKLINE, Mass. — Authorities are investigating the shocking fatal shooting of a renowned professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at his home on Gibbs Street. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, 47, suffered multiple gunshot wounds Monday night and was pronounced dead on Tuesday morning after being transported to an area hospital.
Loureiro was a respected member of the MIT faculty, contributing to both the Nuclear Science and Engineering and Physics departments. He recently became the director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, a significant research facility focused on clean energy technologies. MIT released a statement mourning Loureiro’s passing, highlighting his role as a mentor and leader within the academic community.
Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing several loud bangs around 9 p.m. on the night of the incident, prompting concern and confusion among residents. One neighbor recounted the sounds, initially mistaking them for someone kicking a door. Others expressed their fears about safety in the area. “It’s terrible… we’re living in such scary times right now,” said one resident, emphasizing the growing concern over violence in society.
Having joined MIT in 2016, Loureiro was dedicated to advancing the field of plasma science and worked in one of the largest labs at MIT, which houses over 250 researchers across multiple buildings. Born in Viseu, Portugal, and educated in Lisbon and London, Loureiro’s academic journey included significant roles in research focusing on nuclear fusion.
He was remembered fondly by his colleagues, with Dennis Whyte, a previous director of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, describing Loureiro as a significant influence and admired figure in the academic community. “He shone a bright light as a mentor, friend, teacher, colleague, and leader,” Whyte stated in a tribute.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth expressed her sorrow over the incident, describing Loureiro’s death as an incredible loss for the institution. The U.S. ambassador to Portugal, John J. Arrigo, also offered condolences, recognizing Loureiro’s contributions to science and leadership.
As authorities continue their investigation, involving the Norfolk County district attorney’s office, Massachusetts State Police, and local law enforcement, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made. The community remains on edge as they await further updates on this tragic event.
