Shooting in SouthPark: Community on Edge After Woman Found Dead in Apartment Garage

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A shooting at a high-end apartment complex in SouthPark early Monday has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a resident. Authorities have identified the victim as 45-year-old Dwanneich Hammonds, who was discovered shot in the parking garage of Hazel Southpark shortly before 7 a.m.

Neighbors described the scene as unsettling, alluding to a sense of unease that now permeates the area. Emergency responders rushed Hammonds to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. As investigators work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident, they have yet to release details about any potential suspects.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has urged anyone with information to come forward. Community members can report tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600, with the possibility of receiving a cash reward for helpful information.

In an email circulated to residents, the management of Hazel Southpark assured them that there was no ongoing threat, attempting to restore some sense of safety in an otherwise harrowing situation. The complex is located in an area that records relatively low crime rates; however, the tragic event has heightened concerns about security among residents.

According to crime data from CMPD, prior to the shooting, the Providence Division, which encompasses the area, had reported only one homicide in the first nine months of the year. Additional statistics revealed there were 32 robberies, 65 assaults involving a deadly weapon, and seven incidents where shots were fired into occupied properties.

Residents expressed mixed feelings about their safety in the wake of the shooting. “It’s surprising to see something like this happen here. I have felt secure, but obviously, this changes things,” remarked Diana Melts, a resident of the complex. She mentioned that while access to the building is controlled through a fob system, she hopes management will consider installing additional security measures like more surveillance cameras.

As the investigation unfolds, police have not yet reported any arrests or disclosed further details regarding Hammonds. Community members continue to reflect on the tragic event, hoping for swift justice and increased measures to ensure their safety.

CMPD is set to release updated crime statistics for the third quarter on Wednesday, which may provide additional context as to the overall safety of the area. Meanwhile, the SouthPark neighborhood remains on alert as the community grapples with the impact of this devastating incident.
