Donna, Texas — A tragic incident unfolded outside a daycare center this week, resulting in the death of Nubia Bravo, the facility’s director, and her estranged husband, Saul Esquivel. Bravo, 26, was shot on Wednesday afternoon outside Neni’s Childcare #2, located on Stites Road, by Esquivel, aged 41, who then took his own life.
Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra confirmed that the couple had been living apart after Esquivel’s infidelity came to light. Describing the event as a case of domestic violence, Guerra provided further details about the harrowing circumstances surrounding the shooting. He noted that Esquivel forcibly entered the daycare just before 3 p.m. and that five children were present inside at the time, none of whom were related to either Bravo or Esquivel.
According to authorities, Bravo attempted to protect the children by distracting her husband and fled through a back door. Tragically, Esquivel pursued her, and she was shot outside the facility. Witnesses indicated that while the children did not witness the violence, they may have heard gunfire during the incident.
The sheriff’s office reported that all children present were unharmed in the shooting. In response to the tragedy, the department’s crime victims unit has begun providing support to the daycare staff as well as the families of the children affected.
“This tragic event underscores the need for continued awareness around domestic violence,” Sheriff Guerra stated in a press release on Thursday. His remarks coincided with National Domestic Violence Awareness Day, emphasizing the importance of support for both victims and their families in the community. “No one should endure such trauma alone; our team is here to assist.”
Officials are urging anyone seeking help to reach out to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Victims Services Unit at 956-383-8114. People affected by domestic violence can also contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 for additional support.
The community is left to grapple with the aftermath of this devastating event, highlighting the urgent need for resources and intervention in cases of domestic conflict.
