MARSHFIELD, MO – A Missouri woman, convicted of fatally shooting her boyfriend on New Year’s Eve, will spend the next several decades in prison. The incident unfolded after Madison Nicole Rueckert, 21, discovered incriminating messages on her boyfriend’s phone, which led her to confront him in a deadly manner.
Rueckert was sentenced to a total of 35 years for the killing of Jonathan Miller, 24, in 2022, as city court records show. The sentence, handed down by Webster County Circuit Judge Chuck C. Replogle, comprises 25 years for second-degree murder and an additional 10 years for armed criminal action, to be served consecutively.
Initially, Rueckert faced charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action following her arrest. However, in September, she reached a plea agreement, reducing the charges to second-degree murder and armed criminal action, avoiding a full trial.
Events leading to the tragedy were detailed in a probable cause affidavit. On the night of December 31, 2022, at a local residence, Rueckert found text exchanges between Miller and other women. In a moment of turmoil, Rueckert waited for him to fall asleep before acquiring a firearm and executing the fatal act.
Post-murder, Rueckert fled to a wooded area in Dallas County, Missouri, where she concealed herself overnight. The urgency of her remorse or desperation became apparent as she surrendered to authorities the next day at the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
During questioning by Marshfield detectives, Rueckert reportedly elaborated on her motivations and detailed the crime. A handgun discovered in her vehicle later confirmed its link to the shooting, as forensics matched it to the bullet found at the scene.
Grief-stricken, Jonathan Miller’s mother, Ann Kopp, relived the harrowing day she learned of her son’s death. As she recounted the shocking news delivered by police, confusion clouded her understanding of Rueckert’s violent reaction to mere messages, insisting her son had not been unfaithful.
