Soccer coach in California murders 13-year-old player after convincing the boy’s parents to let him move in

VENTURA COUNTY, CA – A California youth soccer coach has been arrested, accused of murdering a 13-year-old player whose body was discovered on a roadside last week. Mario Edgardo Garcia-Aquino, 43, faces murder charges in the death of Oscar “Omar” Hernandez, authorities announced.

Hernandez had reportedly stayed with Garcia-Aquino, his coach, prompting concern from his family when he failed to respond to messages after arriving in Lancaster on March 28. Two days later, they reported the young player missing. Police later found Hernandez deceased in Oxnard, suggesting Garcia-Aquino may have killed him during a lewd act.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman assured the public that such actions will not go unpunished. “No parent should endure the heartache of losing a child in this way,” Hochman stated, emphasizing the promise of justice for those who victimize children.

While details surrounding the exact causes and circumstances of the death remain undisclosed, Garcia-Aquino’s legal jeopardy could lead to severe consequences, including the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.

Authorities had previously been investigating Garcia-Aquino for an alleged February 2024 sexual assault involving a 16-year-old male. Although charges were filed, insufficient evidence prevented an arrest before the tragedy involving Hernandez.

The investigation remains active, with detectives urging any other potential victims to come forward. “Such crimes must be dealt with decisively,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna. “Our commitment to securing justice for the victims and their families is unwavering.”

Despite their attendance at a recent press conference, Oscar’s family chose not to speak. His mother, however, had previously described him as a joyful soccer enthusiast, lamenting his loss at a vigil.

Gladys Bautista, his mother, poignantly expressed her grief and anger, stating that her son deserved better than the tragic fate he met.
