JOHNS ISLAND, SC – Authorities are investigating the fatal incident that took the life of an unidentified man on Johns Island, focusing on the events that led to his tragic death late last week. The community, known for its quiet neighborhoods and winding country roads, is grappling with the loss amid a complex case involving allegations of domestic violence.
Emergency responders discovered the man lying unresponsive on North Edenvale Road in the early morning hours of December 1, after receiving multiple calls about a body in the street. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, with visible tire marks suggesting he was struck by a vehicle. The victim’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of relatives.
Charleston County deputies immediately launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. During the investigation, a white BMW SUV returned to the scene. Deputies identified the driver as Phoebe Grace Armstrong, 28, who was taken into custody after evidence on her vehicle raised suspicions.
Forensic teams noted what appeared to be dried blood on the exterior of Armstrong’s car. Subsequent tests confirmed the substance was human blood and matched the DNA of the deceased. Investigators also examined the undercarriage of the vehicle, where they found further evidence corroborating their findings.
Detectives interviewed Armstrong, who initially said she had spent the previous evening with the victim before dropping him off at another location. However, her account was contradicted by data obtained from her cellphone and the vehicle’s GPS, which tracked her movements in the area during the timeframe the victim is believed to have been killed.
Additional investigation unearthed a video found on Armstrong’s phone, filmed between 8:25 p.m. and 8:28 p.m. on November 30. The footage reportedly shows the victim outside the SUV, walking away as Armstrong sits in the driver’s seat. Authorities say the video captured the culmination of a domestic dispute between the two, adding that their relationship had a documented history of violence involving both individuals as perpetrators and victims in past incidents.
Surveillance footage from a nearby gas station later that evening showed Armstrong inspecting her vehicle with a cellphone flashlight, further raising questions about her involvement, deputies said.
According to the Medical University of South Carolina’s autopsy report, the man died from blunt force trauma to the chest, injuries consistent with being run over by a vehicle.
Following a thorough investigation, Armstrong was charged with murder and booked Tuesday at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center. She is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on February 6, 2026.
