ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — A suspect in a fatal shooting was killed following a tense two-hour standoff with law enforcement on Interstate 95 on Tuesday. The incident began after authorities were alerted to a shooting at an apartment complex in West Palm Beach the previous night.
Deputies from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office discovered a woman with gunshot wounds at the Glenwood Drive location. Although her identity has not been disclosed, officials confirmed that she later succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.
Investigators determined that the suspect had entered the apartment through a back door and shot the victim before fleeing the scene in a black SUV. With probable cause, law enforcement issued a “Be On the Look Out” alert for the vehicle, which was tracked heading north on the interstate.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office intercepted the suspect’s vehicle, coordinating efforts with the Florida Highway Patrol and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. A tactical maneuver near Mile Marker 130 forced the SUV to a stop about four miles from the Midway Road exit. When the suspect exited the vehicle, he was reportedly holding a firearm to his own head.
Negotiators attempted to reach the suspect during the standoff, which lasted throughout the early morning hours. According to the sheriff’s office, he intermittently engaged with deputies but exhibited erratic behavior, repeatedly entering and exiting his vehicle.
Authorities deployed less-lethal munitions during the standoff, but they reportedly did not succeed in deterring his actions. At approximately 1:22 a.m., law enforcement officers discharged their weapons, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
Sheriff Richard Del Toro Jr. described the situation as tragic but praised the professionalism and courage of the officers involved. He underscored that while such outcomes are regrettable, the actions taken by law enforcement helped prevent further harm to both the public and themselves.
The Florida Highway Patrol expressed gratitude for the collaboration with local agencies, reinforcing its commitment to community safety. Meanwhile, the shooting remains under active investigation, with independent reviews being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Office of the State Attorney for the Nineteenth Judicial Circuit.
