Tonawanda, N.Y. — In a distressing incident at a local care facility, state authorities have been prompted to intervene following a violent assault on April 1 at People Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The altercation reportedly occurred when a group of patients, accompanied by two staff members, returned from a day outing. Authorities noted that during the return to People Inc. on Heritage Road, one patient, for reasons yet unclear, began attacking another, resulting in severe injuries. The assailant allegedly assaulted the victim in the parking lot, pulling her hair, biting, and continually hitting her head against a vehicle window.
Staff members at the scene struggled to halt the attack, hindered by their positioning and the configuration of the vehicle. Despite their efforts to quickly fetch additional help, the situation escalated. By the time police arrived, the victim was found unconscious. She was immediately transported to Erie County Medical Center, having experienced multiple cardiac arrests en route. According to medical personnel, she sustained a broken neck, and her survival appeared uncertain.
The assailant was arrested and charged with assault, reflecting the serious nature of the injuries inflicted. Due to concerns about further risk to the public and other individuals at the facility, he was detained at the Erie County Holding Center.
