Stranger with hatchet nearly decapitates 32-year-old Arizona man at bus stop

TUCSON, AZ – In a tragic turn of events, Jacob Couch, who battled severe injuries for nearly two weeks following a brutal attack, has died. The Alabama native, 32, was hospitalized after suffering a near-decapitation by a hatchet while at a Tucson bus stop on April 5.

The attack occurred while Couch and his wife, Kristen, were sitting at the bus stop when a man, later identified as 25-year-old Daniel Michael, allegedly approached them aggressively. According to Kristen, attempts to de-escalate the situation were in vain, and Michael struck Couch in the back of the neck with a hatchet.

Jacob Couch succumbed to his injuries on the night of April 17 at the University Medical Center Tucson, as confirmed by his sister-in-law. Family members noted that complications such as pneumonia contributed to the tragic outcome, as his heart failed after initially surviving the attack.

Kristen Couch, mourning the loss of her husband, shared memories and heartfelt messages on social media, expressing disbelief and sorrow over the unexpected tragedy.

She expressed gratitude to everyone who supported them through this difficult period and outlined plans for Couch’s return to their home in Alabama for his final arrangements.

The couple had relocated to Los Angeles from Arab, Alabama, after suffering a miscarriage. Intended to be a fresh start, their journey back to Alabama was interrupted by the horrific incident. Both had children from previous relationships and were on the brink of starting a new chapter together.

Michael, the accused, was apprehended by authorities three days after the incident. Initially charged with aggravated assault, his charges now include first-degree murder following Couch’s death. He is currently held on a $2 million bond, awaiting further legal proceedings.

The community, alongside Couch’s family, is grappling with the senselessness of the attack while legal steps are underway to ensure justice is served. No further comments have been made by the police or attorney’s offices regarding the ongoing investigation.
