WEST FORK, Ark. — Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the tragic double homicide of two hikers at Devil’s Den State Park. Andrew James McGann, 28, was arrested Wednesday at a barbershop in Springdale while getting a haircut.
Law enforcement reported that Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41, were fatally assaulted on a hiking trail over the weekend. Their two daughters, aged 7 and 9, were present during the incident but are currently safe with family members. Investigators do not believe McGann had any prior relationship with the Brinks.
Major Stacie Rhoads of the Arkansas State Police stated that they cannot disclose the motive for the stabbings at this time. “We’re not going to talk about his motive right now,” Rhoads said during a press conference following the arrest. Further details regarding the investigation will be released to the public in the coming days.
McGann was a recent arrival in Springdale, having moved from Oklahoma. He had been hired as a teaching candidate for the upcoming school year at Springdale Public Schools but had not interacted with students or their families. Prior to his move, McGann served as a fifth-grade teacher at Broken Arrow Public Schools in Oklahoma.
Family and friends are mourning the loss of the Brinks, who had relocated to Prairie Grove just prior to the tragedy. Danikka Harrell, a close friend of the couple, expressed deep sorrow for their daughters, conveying her heartache as both a parent and a friend. “They are such sweet people, and they’re so genuine. I’m really struggling to understand why or how this could happen to such wonderful individuals,” Harrell said.
The Brinks’ family issued a plea for privacy during this difficult time as they navigate their grief and seek justice. “Clinton and Cristen died heroes protecting their little girls, and they deserve justice. They will forever live in all of our hearts,” the family stated.
As the investigation continues, community members remain in shock over the violent incident in their local park, a place typically known for its natural beauty and tranquility. Local authorities have asked anyone with information about the case to step forward to assist with the ongoing inquiry.
McGann is currently facing two charges of capital murder and has been booked into the Washington County Detention Center pending further legal proceedings.
