Pinole, Calif. — A man initially arrested for a violent assault has now been charged with homicide following the death of a 74-year-old woman who suffered injuries from the attack, authorities reported Wednesday.
The incident occurred on May 28 when two individuals were out walking their dog near Bayfront Park. They were suddenly struck with a blunt object by an unidentified assailant, leaving one victim, Vera Rowsey, critically injured. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Law enforcement quickly identified the suspect as 27-year-old Miguel Patino, leading to his arrest in Richmond. Initially charged with aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse, Patino’s situation escalated when Rowsey succumbed to her injuries on June 4.
With Rowsey’s death, the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office has amended the charges against Patino to include murder and enhanced elder abuse allegations. He remains in custody with bail set at $1,125,000.
In a statement reflecting community sorrow, Pinole Mayor Cameron Sasai expressed condolences to Rowsey’s family and praised the swift action of law enforcement. “Vera Rowsey was a beloved member of our Pinole community,” he said. “This senseless act of violence has deeply impacted us all. We are committed to supporting the path to justice and healing.”
Community members are urged to assist the investigation by providing any information they may have. The Pinole Police Department can be reached at (510) 724-8950. Investigators are actively pursuing all leads to ensure accountability for this tragic event.
This case underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding public safety in the area, prompting local officials to consider further measures to protect residents. As the investigation progresses, the community remains united in their grief and resilience against violent crime.
