OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mark Sanders, the suspected shooter in the fatal killing of Oakland police officer Tuan Le, appeared in court for the first time, his arraignment waived and plea not entered. Defense Attorney Annie Beles reminded the public that Sanders is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt by the prosecution.
Officer Le was fatally shot while responding to a reported burglary at a cannabis business, while working undercover and in an unmarked vehicle. Sanders is being charged with murder with special circumstance and special allegations, facing life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted.
In court, Le’s family members and law enforcement members were present for the hearing. Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price announced the charges alongside Mayor Sheng Thao and Interim Oakland Police Chief Darren Allison.
Sanders is not the only suspect involved, as a second suspect, Allen Brown, is also being charged with murder. Additionally, a third suspect, Sebron Russell, faces burglary charges, with a long list of prior charges related to kidnapping and use of a deadly weapon. A fourth man, Marquise Cooper, was also reportedly in custody, arrested on a burglary warrant in Southern California.
All three men will return on Jan. 18 to enter a plea as the case continues to develop. The trial and investigation will proceed as law enforcement and the legal system seek justice for the tragic killing of Officer Tuan Le.
