TACOMA, Wash. — In response to a series of violent incidents, Metro Parks Tacoma is contemplating the installation of permanent surveillance cameras at key points throughout the local parks. This decision comes in the wake of a recent assault where a woman was attacked while walking her dog in a parking lot near Point Defiance Park’s off-leash area.
This latest incident has added to a growing list of assaults, prompting a collaboration between park officials and Tacoma police to determine optimal locations for these cameras. The initiative aims to enhance security and restore the park’s reputation as a place of relaxation and tranquility.
Park visitors like Angie Castro express concern over these troubling events. “We shouldn’t have to be afraid to come here,” Castro said during a recent visit. “This park is meant for solitude and relaxation. It’s disappointing to see it marred by violence.”
Historically, Point Defiance has been known for its serene environment, but recent years have seen an uptick in criminal activity. “It’s become part of a troubling trend,” said Joe Brady of Metro Parks Tacoma. “We’ve never had events like this happen with regularity before, so clearly, we need to implement changes.”
In the past, temporary measures such as adjusting park hours and installing temporary cameras were employed. These steps were reactionary to various incidents, including a shooting that injured a child and a stabbing on a trail within the park. However, these cameras provided insufficient quality for police needs, according to Brady, who emphasized the necessity for a system that offers a clearer digital footprint of park visitors.
Metro Parks Tacoma and local police have identified approximately 12-15 strategic locations for the installation of these permanent cameras. The park administration is now seeking proposals from security companies to develop a more comprehensive security strategy.
“The essence of our park should not be overshadowed by such activities. It’s simply unacceptable,” Brady remarked, underscoring the urgency of restoring safety and security to what he refers to as the “crown jewel” of Tacoma’s parks.
These steps towards heightened security are part of a broader effort to deter crime and assist in law enforcement investigations, ensuring that visitors can once again feel safe in their communal outdoor spaces. The initiative reflects a commitment to both preventing crime and swiftly addressing any incidents that occur, thereby preserving the park’s status as a beloved retreat for the community.
