COLUMBIA, MD — An 18-year-old Columbia resident was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred near a popular shopping mall, which resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and left another 15-year-old critically injured. The Howard County Police Department reported the incident took place on Saturday evening in the vicinity of The Mall in Columbia.
The suspect, identified as Emmetson Zeah, is currently detained at Howard County Detention Center and faces charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Authorities have also connected Zeah to a previous shooting incident that occurred on February 14 along Twin Rivers Road in Columbia. Records indicate that Zeah had breached a home monitoring agreement just a day prior to the most recent shooting.
During an investigation following the arrest, law enforcement officials recovered a firearm and garments from Zeah’s residence, which they believe were used during the crime on Saturday.
The shooting incident tragically ended the life of 16-year-old Michael Robertson, who was attacked around 5:52 p.m. in the parking lot and bus loop area outside a Lidl grocery store located at the 10300 block of Little Patuxent Parkway. The 15-year-old victim, a freshman at Oakland Mills High School, is currently receiving treatment and remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Howard County Police have indicated that this shooting does not appear to be random, suggesting a targeted attack, though no details about a possible motive have been disclosed. To reassure the public, officials confirmed that there was no active shooter situation at the time, and the mall continued its operations without a lockdown, even as the community reels from the violence.
Local residents expressed their concern and dismay over the violence. Craig Stone, who lives near the mall, described the event as “a very sad moment for around here,” reflecting a sentiment of shock that has rippled through the community. In response to the incident, some store personnel took immediate safety measures. Holden Rushing, an employee at the mall, recounted hearing a loud noise followed by the swift implementation of a lockdown in his store until it was safe to resume regular activities.
The recent shooting adds to a disturbing pattern of violence at this location. Less than a year ago, another deadly incident occurred at The Mall in Columbia, marking this as the second such occurrence in a span of mere months. Residents like Kylon Lymon voiced concerns over the frequency and proximity of these tragedies, raising questions about security measures in and around the mall area.
In light of this and previous incidents, Howard County Police Chief Gregory Der emphasized the police department’s commitment to law enforcement and community safety. “We’re using every resource that we have,” he stated, assuring that crimes within the county will be pursued aggressively.
