GILBERT, AZ— Gilbert Town Council members are convening to address the recent surge in teen violence within their community. Concerned citizens have expressed frustration with the lack of action and are urging the council to take decisive measures to address the issue.
Following public comments and emotional pleas, the council unanimously approved the formation of a teen violence subcommittee. Many community members, clad in orange shirts in support of 16-year-old Preston Lord who died after a violent altercation, expressed their fear and concern over the escalating teen violence in the East Valley.
Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg addressed the council, reporting that the department is currently investigating nine cases of teen violence, with a possible connection to a group referred to as the “Gilbert Goons.” Additionally, police are working with other Valley agencies to investigate any potential links regarding these cases.
Many parents voiced their frustration with the perceived lack of support from the town of Gilbert, emphasizing the impact of the ongoing violence on their children. Concerned citizens urged the council to take meaningful action and not turn a blind eye to the situation.
Gilbert police are exploring the possibility of legally classifying the “Gilbert Goons” as a criminal street gang, which could result in enhanced charges or legal implications for the group. The community’s demand for action underscores the urgency of addressing and preventing further instances of teen violence in Gilbert.
As the town grapples with the rising concern of teen violence, the council’s decision to establish a subcommittee reflects a commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring the safety of the community’s youth.
