Clovis, California — The investigation into the shooting death of 18-year-old Caleb Quick has led to the arrest of two teenagers, revealing new details about the tragic incident. During a press conference held Saturday, Police Chief Curt Fleming announced that a 16-year-old boy is suspected of being the gunman, while a 16-year-old girl has been identified as the alleged getaway driver. Both suspects are students within the Clovis Unified School District but have not been named publicly.
Chief Fleming stated that evidence collected from search warrants and witness statements confirm the suspects’ presence at the scene when the crime occurred. They now face murder charges related to Quick’s death, which occurred on the evening of April 23 outside a McDonald’s located on Willow and Nees avenues.
Surveillance footage obtained by authorities shows the male suspect, dressed in black, trailing Quick for approximately 13 minutes before he opened fire. This footage also captured the suspects arriving in a white Tesla, identified as the getaway vehicle, about an hour before the shooting took place. Additional video recorded shortly after the incident shows the male suspect fleeing west on Nees, pursued by the white Tesla.
At the time of their arrests, neither suspect was linked to any information received through tips to Valley Crime Stoppers, prompting officials to confirm that a related reward of $40,000 would not be distributed.
The police investigation revealed that the suspects had engaged private defense attorneys who arranged for their surrender to law enforcement. The female suspect was reportedly at her attorney’s office in downtown Fresno before turning herself in, while the male suspect followed suit later that afternoon. A firearm was subsequently recovered from the alleged gunman’s residence.
Fleming noted that the suspects and Quick were acquainted and had previously been involved in a dating relationship, but the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. As the investigation continues, Chief Fleming stated that authorities are focused on providing factual information to the community while dispelling any rumors about the case.
With the case now moving to the District Attorney’s Office, the deadline for formal charges is set for Tuesday, marking an important step in seeking justice for Caleb Quick. As more details emerge, the community awaits answers regarding the circumstances surrounding this senseless act of violence.
