NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Two teenage boys have been charged in connection with a brutal sexual assault that took place in a Walgreens restroom on Sunday afternoon, police announced. The incident has left the community in shock and raised concerns about safety in public spaces.
James Patterson, 17, and a 15-year-old boy, both residents of Lisle, allegedly attacked a female acquaintance in the store located at 713 East Ogden Avenue around 3 p.m. Sunday. Authorities report that the assault occurred in a bathroom, a setting that many would consider a sanctuary for privacy.
According to the police, Patterson is accused of forcefully pinning the victim against a stall wall and removing her pants. Despite her pleas for him to stop, he allegedly continued his assault, physically overpowering her. During the ordeal, Patterson reportedly struck the victim multiple times as she attempted to escape, resulting in serious physical harm.
The younger suspect is said to have recorded parts of the assault using his phone, further complicating the case against the two. Witnesses confirmed that the victim managed to flee the stall and sought help from store employees immediately after the attack.
Store personnel alerted local law enforcement, who quickly apprehended the suspects nearby. During Patterson’s arrest, police discovered he possessed the victim’s cellphone, which may serve as crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.
Patterson faces multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of robbery. Meanwhile, the name of the 15-year-old has not been released due to his status as a juvenile; he is charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, four counts of possession of child sexual abuse material, and one count of criminal sexual assault.
Patterson’s case has been transferred to adult court, where a judge has ordered him to be held without bail as the legal process proceeds. He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 2. The juvenile suspect’s next court date is set for January 27.
