HIRAM, GA – The quiet community of Hiram was shaken by a tragic incident Sunday, as police reported the fatal stabbing of a 17-year-old boy by his mother, followed by the mother’s death in a confrontation with officers.
Police identified the teenager as Khalil Wigfall, describing him as a young man with a bright future, passionate about sports and motorcycles. Authorities said his mother, 38-year-old Danielle McDowell, was shot and killed by officers after she allegedly charged at them with a knife.
Cathy Keenan, Khalil’s grandmother, grappled with disbelief upon hearing the devastating news. “It’s unimaginable,” she expressed, reflecting on the heartbreaking moment she learned about the death of her grandson.
The incident unfolded at the Columns apartment complex on Bill Carruth Parkway, a typically serene neighborhood in Paulding County. According to police, officers initially attempted to subdue McDowell with a Taser, but it was ineffective, leading to the fatal shooting. McDowell later succumbed to her injuries at a nearby hospital.
Khalil was a student at Hiram High School, known for his vibrant personality and infectious smile. His grandmother described him as someone who naturally attracted people with his charisma.
The family’s turmoil was compounded by McDowell’s lengthy struggle with mental health issues. Keenan shared that McDowell, a former Army Reservist, had been battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for over 15 years. Despite seeking help through the Veterans Administration, effective treatment remained elusive.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Wigfall family is raising funds to transport Khalil’s body back to Syracuse, New York, his place of birth, for burial. Keenan, a pastor, will officiate the funeral services as the family gathers to mourn their loss.
A community vigil and balloon release to honor both mother and son are scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. in a gesture of remembrance for a family torn apart by unimaginable tragedy.
