Police responding to an afternoon call on September 22 entered the residence to find 62-year-old Kathleen Bullock dead in a bathroom, the victim of a gunshot wound. Her husband, 66-year-old Lavan Bullock, was quickly identified as the primary suspect and now faces a first-degree murder charge in her death.
Court records in Longview paint a grim picture of the hours leading up to and following the killing. Investigators allege that Lavan Bullock sent a series of harrowing text messages to a friend shortly after the incident, confessing to the crime and hinting at a troubled marital history. In these messages, he reportedly claimed to have “lost [his] mind” before pulling the trigger on his wife.
After the shooting, Lavan Bullock is believed to have made an attempt on his own life, informing his friend by text that he had taken 30 sleeping pills. Emergency responders, arriving on the Longview scene, transported him to a local hospital for treatment of what authorities described as non-life-threatening injuries.
As police gathered details, the friend who received Bullock’s texts shared that Kathleen had had asked for a divorce only weeks earlier. Adding another layer to the tragedy, neighbors told investigators that Lavan Bullock had expressed suspicions that his wife might be involved in an affair. Both revelations deepened concerns about mounting tension behind the closed doors of their home.
Loneliness, despair, and a lifetime of grievances seemed to come to a head in those final hours.
