Texas Thunderstorms Kill Four, Leaving Nearly a Million Without Power

Houston, Texas – A devastating storm swept through southeast Texas, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving nearly a million homes and businesses without power. The impact of the thunderstorms has been immense, with residents facing the possibility of being without power for weeks, according to Texas county official Lina Hidalgo.

The storm not only resulted in fatalities but also caused significant damage, with fallen trees, shattered windows in high-rise buildings, and a crane being blown over. The aftermath of the storm has now shifted to neighboring Louisiana, where flood warnings have been issued for the Gulf Coast region.

In the heart of Houston, the effects of the storm were evident – traffic lights were out, office windows were blown through, and glass littered the city’s streets. Video footage captured the destruction, with windows and parts of the roof at the Hyatt Regency blown out by the strong winds from the storm.

As the city grappled with the aftermath, Mayor John Whitmire urged residents to stay indoors and warned them against venturing out unless necessary. The National Weather Service office in Houston issued flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings for multiple counties as the city worked to address a backlog of emergency calls, mainly related to gas leaks and downed wires.

The power outage situation in Texas was dire, with nearly one million customers left in the dark, primarily in Harris County, home to over 4.7 million people. The strong winds, reaching speeds of 161 km/h (100mph), were reminiscent of Hurricane Alicia in 1983, catching officials off-guard with the severity of the storm.

As recovery efforts began, Harris County libraries opened their doors as cooling centers for residents without power, emphasizing the long road ahead for restoration efforts. The storm’s impact extended into Louisiana, where thousands of households were also without power, adding to the widespread disruption caused by the severe weather event.
