SMITHVILLE, Tenn. — In a tragic and complex case spanning multiple counties, authorities have arrested three individuals linked to the slayings of a homeowner and two others in Warren County. The discovery of the bodies initiated a meticulous investigation led by local sheriff’s deputies alongside state agencies.
The episode began early Wednesday when deputies were summoned to the 900 block of Merry Oaks Road following a report of a deceased individual inside a home. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers found not only the reported body but also two additional victims in a nearby outbuilding used as a dwelling. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office identified the victims as homeowner William Piechocniski, Dana Ramsden, and Otis Hawks II.
As the investigation unfolded, stolen property traced back to the Merry Oaks Road residence surfaced in Nashville and Memphis, aiding detectives in piecing together the events and identifying the suspects. Jessica Root, Hannah Rose, and Caleb Brookins were subsequently pinpointed as persons of interest in connection with the homicides.
This breakthrough led authorities to the Bell Street Apartments in neighboring DeKalb County on Thursday. Root, a former resident of the apartments and still connected through family ties, was apprehended there under a search warrant. Brookins and Rose were later spotted arriving in a vehicle from Nashville.
A dramatic confrontation ensued when Brookins and Rose attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle, striking a local government truck and a Homeland Security agent in the process. The District Attorney General, Chris Stanford, reportedly fired shots at the vehicle amid the chaos. Fortunately, the Homeland Security agent sustained only a leg injury, and no other law enforcement personnel were harmed during the incident.
Following a brief manhunt, Rose was taken into custody, while Brookins was found by Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents in the area, ultimately captured without a firearm. During the ensuing lockdown, safety measures were swiftly implemented across several educational institutions in Smithville, affecting after-school programs but permitting parents to collect their children safely.
Charges swiftly followed the arrests, with Brookins and Root facing three counts of criminal homicide. They are currently detained at the Warren County Jail. Rose faces charges of evading arrest and aggravated assault, and is being held in DeKalb County.
Further complicating the series of events, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the actions leading up to Stanford firing his weapon, although no injuries resulted from the gunfire.
