Three Christians Critically Injured in Sectarian Attack in Egypt’s Minya Village

Minya, Egypt — Tensions flared into violence in the village of Ashrouba as three Christian men sustained severe injuries in a stabbing attack by a group of Muslim men on November 5. According to local police, Amir Narouz Jaber, his brother Abanoub Narouz Jaber, and Hanna (John) Magdi Malak Shehata fell victim to this violent incident involving knives and machetes, underlining the mounting communal tension in the region.

This recent assault marks a disturbing uptick in hostility between the Christian and Muslim communities in Ashrouba, an issue that residents say has been a longstanding problem. The injured include Amir and Abanoub, both of whom suffered severe hand injuries, with Amir’s requiring attention from orthopaedic and vascular surgery specialists. Hanna’s injuries were mostly facial, necessitating 10 stitches.

Following the incident, security in the village has been heightened, as authorities work to prevent further outbreaks of violence. Several assailants have been arrested, with investigations into the matter ongoing.

Just days before this attack, another violent episode targeted two Christians from the same village, indicating an alarming pattern of aggression. After an initial confrontation, these individuals were pursued by their attackers even as they sought refuge and medical attention in a local pharmacy.

Long-standing grievances about the lack of infrastructure on the Christian side of Ashrouba, including the absence of a bakery and a school, contribute to these repeated clashes. Children from the Christian community are also compelled to attend schools situated in predominantly Muslim areas, a situation that complicates the lives of these families daily.

Residents stressed that while increased police presence is a stopgap measure, it does not address the root causes of the discord. They advocate for more substantive dialogue between the communities, joint community projects, and heightened efforts to foster tolerance and understanding.

Christians in Ashrouba have repeatedly called for solid, actionable plans over mere dialogues, urging for the law to be upheld without bias. They point out that too often, disputes are settled through informal reconciliation that forces compromises on Christians, circumventing true justice.

As this pattern of violence continues, the Christian community in Ashrouba and surrounding areas remains on edge, seeking not only protection but lasting solutions to the sectarian strife that has shadowed them for too long. Amid these challenges, there is a collective call for an end to this cycle of violence and hatred, hoping for peace and coexistence to prevail.
