OLYMPIA, Wash. — A couple in Thurston County is facing a series of animal cruelty charges following a grim discovery at their residence in October, where authorities found several dead puppies. Neighbors had reportedly voiced concerns about the welfare of animals at the home of Timothy and Taren Johnston dating back to September 2023. Allegations included the mistreatment of multiple puppies, which neighbors say were left without sufficient shelter and consistently appeared malnourished and dehydrated.
Authorities, responding to these concerns, had frequently visited the Johnston’s property. Joseph Butcher, a field officer with Joint Animal Services, noted that initial interventions led to the rehoming of one litter of puppies. However, subsequent visits revealed continuing neglect, including another litter suffering under similar conditions.
The situation reached a critical point in late October when a welfare check by Butcher revealed a tragic scene. “We gave repeated advisories concerning the necessary care standards required by law,” Butcher said. “Regrettably, during a follow-up, we discovered several puppies deceased.”
Investigations confirmed that at least five puppies died on the property. A subsequent veterinary examination led to one more being euthanized after testing positive for parvovirus, a highly contagious and often deadly canine virus.
A neighbor, who preferred to stay anonymous, shared with officials and media that the distressing outcome was feared for some time. “It was heartbreaking to predict, yet we never imagined the toll would be this extensive,” the neighbor stated.
Earlier this month, the Johnstons were arrested and faced multiple charges related to animal cruelty. They have since pleaded not guilty and were released pending trial. In a statement, Timothy Johnston expressed devastation over the loss of the dogs, vehemently denying any neglect or abuse.
As the case proceeds to trial scheduled for May, it underscores ongoing debates about animal rights and the effectiveness of animal welfare laws.
