Vancouver, Canada — A tourist from Toronto was assaulted in a seemingly random attack while exploring Vancouver’s scenic Seawall, police confirmed. The incident, which occurred in the late hours of April 15 in the Coal Harbour neighborhood, has prompted an investigation by local authorities.
The victim, a woman who had arrived in Vancouver just over a day before the attack, decided to spend her evening sightseeing and dining out before the unfortunate incident. According to her statements on social media, she was approached and then violently attacked by an unknown man who had initially spoken to her.
Describing the terrifying encounter, the victim recalled the man sprinting towards her and striking her to the ground. Despite her attempts to escape, the aggressor continued to pursue and assault her, forcing her to defend herself.
In an act of self-defense, the victim used items in her possession, including cans of White Claw vodka sodas, to fight off the attacker. Ultimately, the assailant fled the scene, and the woman immediately contacted the police to report the incident.
The attack did not end with the initial confrontation. The perpetrator continued to pursue the victim, smashing her phone on the ground when she attempted to call for help. In her recollection of the event, she noted the perverse glee the man seemed to derive from the assault.
Throughout the ordeal, which included multiple physical confrontations, the victim sustained serious injuries, including a broken nose and a significant cut above her eye. She managed to escape her attacker long enough to find refuge with a group of undercover police officers, who then apprehended the man as he continued his pursuit.
Following the arrest, the victim was transported to the hospital, where she was treated for her injuries. Throughout the ordeal, she praised the response of the first responders and medical personnel who assisted her, acknowledging their crucial support during the harrowing experience.
Investigating the incident, Sgt. Steve Addison of the Vancouver Police Department commended the victim’s bravery and resilience in facing such a traumatic event. He emphasized the gravity of the attack and assured ongoing support for the victim, acknowledging the long recovery ahead, both physically and emotionally.
The attacker, identified as Peterhans Jalo Nungu, was charged with assault causing bodily harm. He appeared in court, where conditions were set for his release pending trial, including strict monitoring and mandatory attendance at psychiatric assessments.
