STOCKTON, Calif. — A joyous birthday celebration for a child turned tragic over the weekend when gunfire erupted at a banquet hall, leading to the deaths of three children, including an 8-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy, along with an adult. The incident, which occurred Saturday while approximately 100 attendees were gathering to cut a cake, is drawing attention to the growing issue of gun violence in the community.
Among the victims was Maya Lupian, who had just celebrated her eighth birthday on Dec. 13. Described by her family as a vibrant and lively child, Maya was a third-grader at Aspire APEX Academy, who loved dancing, singing, and participating in karate. “Maya was the kind of child who lit up every room she entered,” her family stated in a heartfelt message. They expressed their devastation over losing a child who was a source of joy for them and others in her life.
Amari Peterson, also a victim, was a 14-year-old attending the same celebration with his family. His mother, Kimberly Peterson, recounted how her son was the heart of their family, filling their lives with laughter and love. Kimberly witnessed the chaos unfold as a masked gunman opened fire at the gathering, and her husband, Patrick, described the harrowing moments when he attempted to save their son after finding him shot in the chest. Despite efforts to perform CPR until medical personnel arrived, Amari passed away shortly thereafter.
The shooting also resulted in injuries to others, including a 12-year-old sister of Amari, who managed to escape after being grazed by a bullet. Friends and family have since launched a fundraiser to help them cope with the unexpected loss and funeral expenses, as they process the shock of Amari’s early death.
Witness Patrice Williams shared her disbelief over the incident, recalling the moment when what she thought were balloons popping turned out to be gunfire. Attendees dropped to the floor in confusion and fear, as chaos enveloped the room. Williams expressed her sorrow for those who lost loved ones and criticized the shooter for disrupting a moment meant for celebration.
Sheriff Patrick Withrow reported that a total of 11 people were wounded in the attack, underscoring the troubling climate of violence in Stockton, a city with a population of around 320,000. The sheriff described the incident as a targeted shooting, though specific details regarding motivations and potential suspects have not yet emerged. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward in hopes of bringing clarity to this tragic event.
In recent years, Stockton has grappled with rising crime rates, especially violent incidents. The San Joaquin Valley area, where the city is located, has recorded some of the highest violent crime statistics in California. Community leaders and officials are now calling for collective action to ensure the safety of families and children at public events.
As the community mourns and seeks answers, the loss of young lives in what should have been a festive occasion shines a stark light on the need for addressing the pervasive issue of gun violence in society. The tragic incident serves as a painful reminder of the urgent discussions surrounding safety, gun control, and community support that need to take center stage.
