Brentwood, New York — A 30-year-old man has been indicted for the fatal stabbing of his mother, a tragic incident that unfolded in their shared home. The man’s actions reportedly left the community shaken and raised serious questions about domestic violence in family settings.
Jason Kurumoglu was arrested earlier this month following a 911 call that alerted authorities to the situation. When officers arrived at the residence on West White Street, they discovered the lifeless body of 59-year-old Melida Velasquez. According to investigators, the woman had a knife embedded in her back, and significant blood was found at the scene. She was pronounced dead upon their arrival.
Witnesses reported a loud commotion shortly before police were called. A downstairs tenant recounted hearing what sounded like a heavy thump followed by the victim’s desperate cries for help. This neighbor also noted hearing a male voice in the apartment with Velasquez during the incident. Police later reported that Kurumoglu did not attempt to flee the scene; he emerged from the house and surrendered without incident.
