MABANK, Texas — Authorities are grappling with a tragic mass shooting that unfolded early Friday morning in the Cedar Creek Cove subdivision, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to two others. The events surrounding the shooting have left the community in shock as investigators continue to uncover details.
The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspected shooter as 29-year-old Christopher Kyle Reid Jr., who died following a self-inflicted gunshot wound after crashing his vehicle into a Buc-ee’s convenience store in Ennis later that day. Details surrounding the time of his death have not been disclosed.
Among the injured, 24-year-old Colton Reid has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. Meanwhile, 70-year-old Henry Hopgood remains hospitalized but has shown signs of improvement, transitioning from critical condition to a more stable one.
The horrific scene revealed the lifeless bodies of three individuals: Kimberly Simpson, 51; Connie Patrick, 72; and Rodney Hammonds, 57. Simpson and Patrick succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds, while Hammonds experienced more severe injuries, including gunshot wounds, blunt force trauma, and multiple stab wounds.
Authorities responded to the initial shooting at approximately 2:30 a.m., discovering multiple victims at the scene. Reid was quickly identified as the shooter, prompting immediate efforts to locate him. By 5 a.m., he had crashed his maroon 2003 Dodge Caravan into the Buc-ee’s, striking a woman in her 30s against a display inside the store.
After the crash, Reid inflicted the self-harm wound before being taken to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he was pronounced dead. The pedestrian involved in the incident sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is also receiving medical care.
