PERRY, Iowa — The mother of an 11-year-old boy, Ahmir Jolliff, who was killed in a school shooting in Perry, Iowa, described him as a child full of happiness and a love for both sports and music. Jolliff, was a victim who was fatally shot by a gunman who opened fire inside Perry High School, killing Jollif and injuring several others. The shooter, 17-year-old Dylan Butler, used a handgun and pump action shotgun during the incident, striking Jolliff three times.
According to his mother, Ahmir was a friendly and outgoing sixth-grade student who was thrilled to return to school after the holidays. His wake was set for January 10th, and his funeral is scheduled to occur at St. Patrick Catholic Church the next day. A memorial was created in front of the school to honor Jolliff’s memory.
The chaos of the shooting left his mother unable to locate her daughter, a ninth-grader, but she extended her condolences to the family of the gunman, Dylan Butler, and expressed her wishes that changes to the school system could prevent similar tragedies in the future. Among the victims injured in the shooting were the school’s principal, Dan Marburger, and two other employees, as well as four students. Marburger is recognized for protecting his students during the shooting, as he acted selflessly and shielded them from harm. He underwent surgery and is currently recovering in the hospital.
The loss of young Ahmir has left the community stunned and heartbroken, emphasizing the need for preventive measures to ensure the safety of students in schools across the country.
