Tragedy Strikes as Two Tremonton Police Officers Fatally Shot During Domestic Incident; Third Officer and K9 Injured

TREMONTON, Utah — An evening of tragedy unfolded Sunday night when two officers from the Tremonton-Garland Police Department were fatally shot while responding to a domestic disturbance. A third officer from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office and a police service dog were also injured during the incident.

The Box Elder Communication Center received numerous 911 disconnect calls shortly after 9 p.m. from a residence located near 700 N. 200 East. One officer arrived on the scene and began engaging with a resident when an armed male emerged, shooting and killing the officer. A second officer who arrived to assist was also gunned down.

The injured officer, a sheriff’s deputy, and a police dog were struck by gunfire as the suspect fired multiple rounds into their vehicle. Both were later taken to a local hospital for the officer and a veterinary clinic for the dog, with reports indicating they were in fair condition.

Law enforcement from multiple agencies, including Box Elder, Weber, and Cache counties, quickly joined their colleagues in controlling the situation. The suspect was eventually persuaded by nearby residents to disarm himself and was taken into custody without further incident.

In a press briefing on Monday morning, Brigham City Police Chief Chad Reyes confirmed the officers who lost their lives were pronounced dead at the scene. While identities have not been disclosed, investigators indicated that the suspect resides at the address where the confrontation occurred.

Reyes emphasized the inherent dangers of responding to domestic calls. “These situations are unpredictable, and unfortunately, they can escalate quickly. The officers knew the risks associated with their duty,” he stated.

Around 40 to 50 officers responded to the scene, demonstrating a strong show of support from the community and neighboring agencies. Chief Reyes noted that the impact of such an event resonates not only within law enforcement but also extends to the broader public.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed condolences via social media, mourning the loss of the courageous officers and offering prayers for their families.

The Utah Chiefs of Police Association echoed this sentiment, emphasizing unity within the law enforcement community during these trying times. The tragic event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect their communities.

As investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses, the incident has prompted calls for increased awareness around the dangers officers face, particularly during domestic incidents. The communities are left to grieve and seek ways to support the families affected by the heartbreaking loss.
