Okigwe, Nigeria — A tragic attack on Thursday in Imo State’s Okigwe Local Government Area left at least 15 individuals dead when armed assailants ambushed commuters along the Okwelle axis of Okigwe Road. The gunmen blocked the roadway, indiscriminately firing upon vehicles and igniting several, including large trucks.
Eyewitnesses described frantic scenes, highlighting one resident who escaped unharmed, while the motorcyclist who was transporting him suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Graphic videos circulating on social media captured the aftermath, showing smoking vehicles and the chaos that ensued.
According to a statement from Henry Okoye, a spokesperson for the Imo State police, the attack has been attributed to suspected members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The police reported an exchange of gunfire between the attackers and security forces, resulting in the death of one gunman, while others reportedly fled, some with injuries.
In addition to the fatalities, authorities recovered a stolen Toyota Corolla and a laptop from the scene. Police officials stated they are actively pursuing leads to apprehend those who escaped.
This violent episode amplifies existing concerns about security in Nigeria’s southeastern region, where tensions have escalated amid the continued detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu. Over the past several months, violence linked to separatist groups has surged, prompting fears about a broader breakdown of law and order in the area.
Local residents are increasingly calling for enhanced security measures and accountability as they grapple with the repercussions of such violent incidents. The situation highlights the urgent need for effective strategies to address the rising tide of violence that has created a climate of fear in the community.
As the investigation unfolds, officials remain under pressure to restore peace and stability in a region beset by unrest. Community leaders and citizens alike are anxiously awaiting further updates from law enforcement as they seek to reclaim a sense of safety in their daily lives.
