Cetinje, Montenegro — A devastating shooting rampage in Cetinje on Wednesday claimed the lives of 12 individuals, including two children, officials confirmed. The assailant, identified by authorities as Aco Martinovic, concluded the spate of violence by taking his own life.
The tragic sequence unfolded across five distinct locations throughout the small Montenegrin town before Martinovic fatally shot himself at a sixth site, explained Prosecutor Andrijana Nastic. Authorities are meticulously combing through these areas, piecing together the exact nature of this grim occurrence.
The violent spree commenced at a local dining establishment where Martinovic killed four men. The assault continued as he proceeded to target four additional individuals at a second location nearby. He then took the lives of two children at a third location before claiming a single life at each of the next two sites. The series of attacks ended when Martinovic, severely wounded from a self-inflicted gunshot, eventually succumbed to his injuries while en route to the Clinical Center of Montenegro.
Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic conveyed that the motives behind Martinovic’s actions remain uncertain. Preliminary investigations have painted a picture of him as socially isolated, although acquaintances and friends were sadly among the victims.
The government has responded swiftly to the carnage. “We are taking immediate steps to ensure that such brutal acts are not repeated,” Saranovic declared, signaling measures to strengthen community safety.
The health ramifications extend beyond the fatalities. Health Minister Vojislav Simun reported that four other individuals were injured during the rampage, with three in critical condition. Medical teams are providing continuous care, performing surgeries, and stabilizing the wounded. Simun also highlighted the provision of psychological assistance to those traumatized by these events.
“The community will need support to recover from this profound loss,” Simun noted, indicating the initiation of mental health assistance programs for the families and other residents profoundly affected by this tragedy.
This incident has plunged Cetinje, and the nation at large, into a state of mourning. This shooting is reported as one of the darkest events in Montenegro’s recent history, echoing the grief from a similar episode in August 2022 when an armed attacker killed 10 people in the same town.
As the investigation progresses, officials aim to unveil more about the circumstances leading to this atrocious act, with reflections on possible preventative measures. The focus remains on bolstering community ties and enhancing public safety protocols to avert future tragedies.
