Tragedy Strikes: NCCU Student London Powers Dies in Apparent Murder-Suicide Incident

Durham, N.C. — A tragic incident has resulted in the death of a North Carolina Central University student, prompting a community to mourn and reflect on the issues surrounding domestic violence and mental health.

London Powers was reportedly in the process of moving out of an apartment she shared with her ex-boyfriend, Damien Tinsley, when the situation escalated into a violent confrontation. Her friend, Shiann Boyd, described how Powers had been excited about starting anew and escaping a troubled relationship. “She was so happy to finally be moving out,” Boyd recalled, emphasizing that Powers had expressed her determination to avoid men who displayed concerning behaviors.

The sequence of events unfolded on a Monday afternoon when Tinsley unexpectedly arrived at the Camden Pointe Apartments. Boyd stated an argument ensued, leading to physical aggression against Powers. As she attempted to contact emergency services, the conflict turned fatal. Boyd reflected on the desperation of the moment, recalling her frantic pleas for help while on the phone with police.

According to Boyd, Tinsley shot Powers before turning the gun on himself after making eye contact with her. Powers was rushed to a local hospital but later succumbed to her injuries, while Tinsley died at the scene.

The shock of this event has reverberated throughout the NCCU community, where Powers was a junior studying social work. Her dedication to the field was evident in her plans to intern at the Durham Center for Senior Life. Many of her peers and colleagues expressed disbelief at her untimely passing, describing her as vibrant and determined.

De’Andre Gainer, a former coworker, shared his feelings of disbelief. “I feel shell shocked. It doesn’t feel real,” he said, reflecting the sentiments of those who knew Powers. The community’s grief underscores the often-hidden struggles surrounding domestic violence, mental health, and the support networks available to those in need.

In an effort to honor Powers’ memory and support her loved ones, a balloon release is scheduled at the Walgreens on Holloway Street, providing an opportunity for friends and family to gather and celebrate her life. This gathering is set for Thursday evening, illustrating the tight-knit nature of the community that rallied around her.

As investigations continue into the tragic events, there is a growing conversation around the need for increased awareness and resources to address domestic violence, aiming to prevent further tragedies in the future.
