Orlando, Fla. — A night of Halloween celebrations turned tragic in downtown Orlando early Friday morning, leaving two people dead and six others wounded following a pair of shootings among the large crowds. Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old suspect, who now faces multiple charges including first-degree murder.
Police responded to the initial gunfire shortly after 1 a.m. and were quickly on the scene of the second shooting due to its proximity to the first. The swift arrest came within minutes as law enforcement reacted to the incident amid the chaos.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith reported that all injured parties were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where they are listed in stable condition. Victims range in age from 19 to 39, with the fatalities identified as two young men, aged 25 and 19. The chaos also resulted in injuries to a 26-year-old woman, who was trampled while the crowd attempted to escape the frightening scene.
The suspect, identified as Jaylen Dwayne Edgar, had been previously arrested last year for grand theft. He is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a firearm and six counts of attempted first-degree murder. Edgar, believed to have acted alone, was found with a handgun at the time of his arrest, though police have yet to determine his motives or any potential connections to the victims.
Security footage from the area, including videos captured by police body cameras, has been reviewed by authorities and released to provide clarity on the events and the swift police action that led to the arrest.
The Orlando downtown area was packed, with crowd estimates ranging between 50,000 and 100,000 people attending Halloween festivities. Chief Smith commended his officers for their prompt response to the crisis. “Our officers did a great job. They responded right when they heard the shooting. Everybody else is running, they’re not: They’re sitting in position, looking for a shooter. They found the shooter,” he stated.
Local business employee Sofia Alcala described the traumatic scene: “Everyone started running. I saw a group of people, you know, enjoying Halloween … and then shots fired, and everybody just dispersed. I heard so many girls calling and crying.”
In response to the incident, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has declared a local state of emergency. This includes a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. and a cessation of downtown alcohol sales at midnight in an effort to manage the situation and prevent further violence. “We want a downtown that is fun and vibrant, but we have experienced lately brazen criminals willing to come downtown and shoot and kill innocent victims right in front of our police officers,” Dyer explained.
Orange-Osceola State Attorney Andrew Bain mentioned the possibility of charging the teen suspect as an adult, pending further investigation. Meanwhile, the Orlando Police Department plans to increase its patrols throughout the weekend to enhance security and reassure the shaken community.
This incident marks the 18th and 19th homicides recorded in Orlando this year, an alarming statistic as city officials and law enforcement work to understand and mitigate the factors contributing to this violent trend.
